Nigerian pharmacists are often attracted to Canada as their first native language is English and they are very culturally accepting. The Canadian Pharmacists Association reports that there is a national shortage of pharmacists in Canada. So, find yourself lucky if you are a pharmacist and planning to move to Canada. If you look at relative pharmacist demand, there are more people aged 65 or older in Canada than Nigeria. In Canada, it is 15.6% of the total population whereas in Nigeria it is just 3.1% of the whole population.

The only Sub Saharan African country on the Top 10 list of originating countries of foreign Canadian pharmacists is South Africa in seventh place alongside Egypt, USA, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Pakistan, United Kingdom, Yugoslavia, and Korea.

Steps to immigrating

  1. Obtain a visa – this is made easier by the Canadian government including pharmacists in their Federal Skilled Worker Class list allowing for “express entry” which bypasses the Evaluation Exam listed below.
  2. Language requirements – you must pass a specific English literacy test such as the IELTS or TEF.
  3. Police clearance certificates – you must not hold a criminal record.
  4. Document Evaluation (ECA) – this is performed by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC). Documents required include:
    • Degree certificate
    • Proof of British registration
    • Statement of good standing from the General Pharmaceutical Council
  5. Take the PEBC Evaluating Exam – once your documents are approved you can sit the evaluating and subsequent qualifying exams.
  6. Take the PEBC Qualifying Exam – this exam allows you to register as a pharmacist in Canada.
